The total sample population observed were 274 college student in the library. After observations were complete, there were 67 females and 207 males. 32.4% of the people observed were women.
Out of the females and males observed, there were 8 Asian, 26, African American, 7 Hispanic and 24 Caucasian  female students and 53 African American, 25 Asian and 111 Caucasian males. There were also 11 men and 2 women who their races were unknown.
My research questions was do college students use the library more alone or in groups. The cubicles were used  by 119 people. 43.4% of the people observed in the library chose to study by themselves at a cubicle. With study rooms alone and tables alone included, there are 68.6% people who prefer to study at the library alone.  Female Asian used spaces as groups 37.5% of the time, Female African Americans 19.2% of the time, Female Caucasians 41.6% of the time, Male Asians 44% of the time, Male Caucasians 32.3% of the time, Male Hispanics 14.3% of the time, Male Other 36.4% of the time and Male African American 34% of the time.
These results would suggest that people use the library more to be alone than in groups. People used the library more alone than in groups no matter what gender or race they were. This could be because there are more cubicles available to people than there are study rooms or tables. The results could suggest the library has more cubicles than tables or study rooms because people typically come to the library alone more. When the cubicles are taken out of the comparison the space is used more equally with people using rooms and tables in groups 55.4% to people using tables alone or rooms alone (44.5%). This could suggest that people would use the space for more evenly if they had more space to do so.

Observation 3

My third observation took place between the hours of 12 and 1 on September 23, 2013. I walked around the library at 12:25 and then again at 12:45. This observation went better than the first two. It was more comfortable to walk around watching people. It felt more routine than weird this time. It felt like people noticed me less. Several times , I would forget to write down the room number associated with the group of people, and when I would go back to check the room number and recount the people, I was rarely noticed. One of the problems, I experienced this time was telling what gender an individual was. Several people in the library were covered up, in the dark or didn't have any prominent features that I could identify with male or female. There were also less people in the library than during the past two observations. During the past observations, there wasn't usually a room that was completely empty. There was a few where people left their stuff, but during this observation there were several rooms that just weren't being used. I also noticed that I was able to complete the observation quicker than the past two observations. This time I was more familiar with the library's layout, so I had a plan on how to keep track of each room and cubicle without backtracking or passing a room I had already accounted for.

Second Observation

The second observation began at 12 and ended at 1 on Monday, September 16, 2013. I went around the library twice during this period to see if there was any change in who was at a table, in a room, or cubicle. This observation was more comfortable than the first observation. It was a lot easier to go from room to room keeping track of who was in there because I was more familiar with the coding scheme. During my first observation, I had to go back often and change a person because I would label Asian as AA or African American as A, but there wasn’t a problem with that this time. I also wrote down the room numbers this time, so I could make sure I didn’t write the same room with the same people in my chart twice. In the first observation, I kept track of people who weren’t studying under absent, but I didn’t care about them for what I was looking at, so I eliminated it from this observation.

Blog 3

I did my observations Monday September 9, 2013 between 12:30 and 1:30. Watching people in the library was rather difficult because there wasn't anywhere to sit and watch groups of people. I had to walk around the library every so often to see if rooms changed and were occupied by different people. I often got strange looks when I was seen again walking around the library. Many people looked at me with puzzled looks. It was also difficult to identify the races of people in the cubicles.  People in the cubicles were more likely to be bundled up in hoodies and starring hard into books than people in the study rooms who were communicating with those around them. Walking around the library, it occurred to me that there are a lot more cubicles available than rooms. The people in the cubicles were less likely to notice me, but the people in the study rooms almost always looked right back at me especially when they were alone. I think it would have been a better observation if I was able to keep better track of who I already saw in a room, table or cubicle.

The sample that I’m looking at is the college students at SPSU who use the library between 12-2. I chose this time because on campus, there are very few classes held at this time, and it is one of the busiest times for the library.  I want to make observations for three Mondays between 12 and 2.  The two sample characteristics I want to look at are gender and race. I chose gender and race because I think they are possible things that could differ when looking at people studying in the library. The five observable behaviors I want to focus on are studying in a study room, studying in a cubicle, studying in a study room with people, studying at a table alone, studying at a table with people. To observe studying, it would be any person or people with books out or on their computer in the library. People who are sleeping or obviously playing a game in the library will not be counted.

Blog 1

My research question is do college students prefer to study alone or in groups when in the library. The library is a quiet place that people can use to focus and get work done. Because many people go to the library to get away from distractions, I am interested in whether people study more by themselves or in groups. People study and learn differently, so I think it will influence the choices made by people to study alone or in a group. Many people learn better from their peers or having someone explain a situation to them, but some people also need to be by themselves to focus on the material they are focusing on. I want to see on our campus which people prefer more. The behaviors I will observe are whether they are studying in a study room, table or cubicle, and I will also look at whether they are alone or in a group. I think I will find that more people study independently than in groups.
